Grass Identification Workshops

This year we are offering two workshops, one near Bend in June and one near John Day in July. Both workshops are now full and registration is closed. I will be teaching some one-day pop-up workshops through the summer.

Grass Identification Workshop

John Day, Oregon

July 20-22, 2021

This workshop will be three days in the field, learning native and  introduced grasses (cultivars and weeds).

The required text for the class is the Field Guide to Grasses of Oregon and Washington. Bring a quality hand lens.

In addition to learning grass anatomy and terminology, you will gain expertise in using the keys and recognizing field characters to distinguish between genera or between species within a genus. That sounds serious, but actually we have a lot of fun with it.

In previous classes students remarked that, although going through the key time after time got repetitive for the instructor, the process created for them a familiarity and level of comfort in using the keys for identifying new grasses. With practice, students became adept at checking one or two characters to finalize an identification.

The fee is $300 for the 3-day workshop. For more information, click here. To inquire about the workshop, send an email to grassesandmore@gmail.com.

This workshop is now full and registration is closed.

Grass Identification

Pop-up Workshops

Central Oregon Summer 2021

I'm planning a series of one-day field workshops in central Oregon for small groups from May into September. The fee is from $40 to $60 for each session, depending on whether it is a part day or full day session. I'm limiting each class to 10 people, so there will be plenty of individual attention. We will meet in the field at a new location each time. You can attend any number of sessions, from one to all. I will be posting information on the types of habitats that will be encountered on each session after I scout the site and announce the date. To get on the notification list, send an email to grassesandmore@gmail.com.
